The Canton City Council today will talk about expanding last call on more than just Saturday nights.

The council's work session is at 6 p.m. at Canton City Hall.

The council will review a proposal to extend alcohol by-the-drink hours from midnight until 2 a.m. on Mondays through Saturdays.

An initial agenda indicated the proposal only was for Saturdays, but Councilman Bob Rush said they will consider making alcohol serving hours from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Mondays through Saturdays.

The council's alcohol committee recommended approval of the measure 2-1 last month, with Councilman Jack Goodwin opposed.

Rush, who supports the extension of pouring hours, said he thinks it will increase commercial growth in Canton as well as revenues for the city government.

The meeting today is a work session, so official action on the proposal cannot be taken.

Well it's about time! These outdated ordinances only serve to hold back Canton from positive, relevant growth. Wake up City Council members, prohibition ended decades ago! Bob Rush is a refreshing new voice! Let's hope others follow his lead and step into the future...

This only makes sense. Why should Canton restaurant owners not be on a level playing field with others in Cherokee County who can pour until 2 a.m.? Time to step into the 21st Century...
