Caldwell may be the youngest state representative ever to serve from the county. Two years ago, Caldwell fell to incumbent state Rep. Charlice Byrd (R-Woodstock) in the Republican Primary.
Byrd then defeated Burnaman in the general election to return to the House. This time, however, after Caldwell beat Byrd in the July primary, a new representative was assured.
Caldwell said he was pleased with the results and proud of the campaigns of both sides in the general election.
“I am one of those few who was excited that I had opposition.
The opposition made me better and always makes for a better level of involvement,” Caldwell said. “I am proud of our race and proud of the race our opposition ran.”
Caldwell said he is excited about the opportunity and thankful to the voters.
“I am humbled and honored, and the real work starts January. We’ve promised all along that we will personally introduce a bill on term limits, and want to see consumptionbased taxes and campaign reform,” he said.
Burnaman was the only Democrat to challenge in a state or local race in Cherokee County this election cycle.
Burnaman says she was running because she envisions a better Georgia.
She could not be reached for comment by press time. Caldwell grew up in Towne Lake and Woodstock. He attended Cherokee County public schools and has been a frequent attendee at local school board meetings since entering politics.
Candidates battling for seats in the Georgia General Assembly included incumbent Sen. John Albers, who was opposed by Democrat Akhtar Sadiq for the 56th Senate District.
In Cherokee, Albers got 67 percent to his Democratic opponent’s 33 percent.
Incumbent Republican Rep. John Carson easily took the precincts in Cherokee in the race for his 46th District seat against Democrat Kevin “Big Kev” Westphal.
Carson took 74 percent in Cherokee County to Westphal’s 26 percent. Carson got 5,844 votes in Cherokee County and Westphal took 2,016.
Both incumbents looked likely to retain their seats, although results from Fulton and Cobb were not all in at press time.
