A 14-year-old boy on vacation from his home in Mexico is recovering after almost drowning in a pool at an Acworth mobile home park Sunday afternoon.

Emergency workers found the teen unresponsive at about 5:20 p.m. on Sunday at the Shadowood Mobile Home Park on Bells Ferry Road where he had been swimming in the park’s pool, said Tim Cavender, spokesman Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, on Monday.

The boy, who was visiting family at the mobile home park, was pulled from the water after a bystander noticed that he had gone under the water and not come back up, according to an incident report from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, which also responded.

“No one at the pool saw” him go under, Cavender said.

After being pulled from the pool, which is owned by the mobile home park, witnesses said the boy was unconscious and was bleeding from the nose with water coming from his mouth, authorities said.

“Paramedics and EMTs reported that (he) was barely breathing,” Cavender said. “According to Medcon operator Dean Hege, we found him unresponsive, but he had a slight pulse and was trying to breathe on his own.”

The teen was sent to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta before being airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite Hospital, Cavender said.

As of noon Monday, he was in the intensive care unit but was expected to recover, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
