Venture Crew 8880 is a co-ed high adventure group sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. They meet at Cherokee Presbyterian in Canton each month, and their latest adventure took them to Nahunta, where they picked up trash along the Satilla River. Venture Crew 8880, which meets at Cherokee Presbyterian in Canton each month, traveled to Nahunta last weekend to camp and pick up trash along the Satilla River.
The group paddled about 20 miles of the Satilla River for the Scout outing, according to leader Mark Rowell.
“They camped on the river bank Friday night and then set out on Saturday morning in a kayak and four canoes with overnight gear and food,” he said. “During the day on Saturday and Sunday they picked up trash to help the not-for-profit Satilla Riverkeeper with keeping the river clean.”
On Saturday night the group camped on a sand bar, cooked over an open fire and listened to barred owls call and watched satellites silently pass overhead.
“We had a wonderful time. The Satilla is an amazing black water river with white sand banks and cypress tree swamps making it one of the prettiest rivers in the state,” Rowell said. “It’s also a very important river to the Georgia watershed and very important it is protected and kept clean.
Venture Crew 8880 meets every second Wednesday night of the month at Cherokee Presbyterian Church on Johnson Brady Road at 7 p.m.
The Crew in 2013 will be doing more canoe/kayak, back packing, firearms and survival skills training and a possible trip to London or Canada during the summer.
