Park rangers say they think the alligator has made a home in some swamp land in the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area just northwest of Atlanta.
There have been several sightings over the past five years, with the most recent one coming during the recent Memorial Day weekend.
Asha Maurya, who took pictures of the gator recently, tells WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/140bLVV) that it was 8 to 10 feet long and likely weighed 300 pounds.
Regular sightings have prompted park rangers to post warning signs near the swamps and main walking trails. The signs urge hikers to keep their small pets on a leash.
