A Canton man is facing a slew of charges after he allegedly fled the scene when he hit a motorcyclist and then flipped his SUV on nearby Shoal Creek Road off Highway 140 last Saturday.

Daniel Lucas, 27, of Canton, will be charged with following too close, hit-and-run, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and driving too fast for conditions, pending his release from WellStar Kennestone Hospital, Canton Police Department spokesman Pacer Cordry said.

Just after 2 p.m. Saturday, Canton police and fire and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a hit-and-run call at the intersection of Waleska Street and Riverstone Parkway, where the alleged victim told dispatchers a green Ford Explorer hit his 1996 Yamaha 750 motorcycle.

Cordry said the driver, who was parked on the side of the road, only had minor damage to his motorcycle and was unharmed.

“The (motorcycle) driver explained that he was stopped at a red light on Waleska Street intersecting with Riverstone Parkway in the left turn lane,” Cordry said. “The driver, pointing to the overturned green Ford Explorer, stated that that green Ford Explorer then rear-ended him.”

Cordry said the motorcycle driver told police he began to follow the Explorer onto Waleska Road when he saw it turn onto Shoal Creek Road and lost track of the car.

While en route to the scene, dispatch notified police of another accident with injuries on Shoal Creek Road near Waleska Road.

Cordry said an officer saw a green Ford Explorer overturned and a man, later determined to be Lucas, laying flat on his back near the SUV. Cordry said Lucas was breathing but unconscious and was treated by medical personnel on scene.

Cherokee Fire and EMS spokesman Tim Cavender said Lucas was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with head injuries. Cordry said Tuesday Lucas has not yet been transported to jail.

A passenger was also in the vehicle, but Cordry said the passenger has not been identified or located.

Cordry said a DUI investigation is ongoing, as police had submitted Lucas’ blood for testing.
