County teams traveled well and went 3-2 away from home, with Etowah, Sequoyah and Creekview all picking up wins. Meanwhile, Cherokee and Woodstock fell to a pair of east Cobb powerhouses in Walton and Lassiter, respectively.
With its loss to Lassiter, Woodstock dropped to 0-5, and it remained the only team in the county without a win. It’s the Wolverines’ worst start since 2002, when they finished 0-10.
Woodstock’s record this year comes as less of a surprise, however, when its early-season schedule is taken into account. The five teams the Wolverines have faced this year — they’ve also played Johns Creek, Harrison, Kell and Walton — have a combined record of 21-4.
Lassiter and Johns Creek are undefeated, while three of the teams — Lassiter, Walton and Kell — are ranked in the top 10 of their respective classifications.
Woodstock coach Brent Budde hopes the level of competition his team has faced will benefit as Region 5AAAAAA play continues next week, and the Wolverines attempt to push for the state playoffs.
“I keep telling our guys, these are playoff-caliber teams that we have been playing,” Budde said. “Playing the great teams that we have so far, we should be getting better every week. Last year, we were 3-1 at this point, but I honestly feel that we are a better team now than we were at this point last year.”
The combined record of Woodstock’s next five opponents — which includes Cherokee and archrival Etowah — is 12-13.
“We do feel confident for the rest of our schedule, and feel we have a good chance of winning from here on out,” Budde said.
After last week saw no team penalized more than five times, the number of infractions was up once again, with Creekview and Woodstock each flagged more than 10 times.
Creekview, which, despite the penalties, still won handily at Osborne, has been penalized more than 10 times in three of its four games this season.
“I don’t have an answer for our penalties (Friday). I don’t even know,” Creekview coach Al Morrell said after his team was flagged 11 times. “We have to quit beating ourselves with stupid penalties. For most of the first half, it seemed that we were starting our drives with a first-and-20. We’ve just been making stupid mistakes that a team shouldn’t make in their fourth game of the season.”
Sequoyah’s Blake Ingleton led the county in rushing yards once again, carrying the ball 29 times for 269 yards and six touchdowns in the Chiefs 41-34 win at Sprayberry.
Ingleton’s six touchdowns were the most for a county player in a single game so far this season. It also marked the third game this year that he has broken 200 yards rushing.
