WOODSTOCK — Kristy Miller, a 22-year-old industrial and systems engineering major at Georgia Tech, was crowned Miss Cherokee Rose 2013 at the annual competition Oct. 13 at the Elm Street Cultural Arts Village in Woodstock.

The special guest for the evening was Leighton Jordan, Miss Georgia 2012, who competes in the Miss America competition in January.

Named fourth runner-up in the pageant was Carly Gill; third runner-up was Meredith Crawley; second runner-up was Lauren Green, and Courtney Giebler was the first runner-up.

During her year of service, Kristy will use her title to promote her platform, “Get Ready, Get Set, Go Vote!” Educating the American Youth on Democratic Responsibilities.

Her wish is to educate America’s youth on the political processes and the importance of taking a hands-on approach. She hopes to visit many local schools to stress the importance of voting and celebrating the right to do so.

The daughter of Mark and Kimberley Miller of Venetia, Pa., Miller is a member of Gamma Phi Beta Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and National Society of Women in Engineering.

She is on Georgia Tech’s Dean’s List and serves as the “Golden Girl” which is the featured baton twirler for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, as well as captain of the Dance Team. A baton twirler for 14 years, she has received national and international recognition.

Contestants for the title of Miss Cherokee Rose were judged in interview, lifestyle and fitness, talent and evening wear. For her talent presentation, Miller performed a dance/twirl to “Fuego” for which she was named the talent winner of the competition. The winner in lifestyle and fitness was Lauren Green.

Also crowned were Miss Cherokee Rose’s Outstanding Teen, Kelly Donoghue, of Marietta and Miss Cherokee Fair’s Outstanding Teen, Sydney Lee, of Cairo.

Donoghue is a 16-year-old junior at Walton High School. The daughter of Tom and Maureen Donoghue of Marietta, she has been awarded the honor of National Society of High School Scholars and the Presidential Academic Excellence Award.

For her talent presentation, she sang “Believe in Yourself.” Her platform is “Special Friends through Special Olympics.” She hopes to encourage others to become involved in the Special Olympics programs in their communities.

Lee is a freshman at Cairo High School in Cairo. The 15-year-old is the daughter of Ryan and Malia Lee, also of Cairo. A pianist, she performed “Sweet Child O’ Mine” for talent.

She was also named the Life Style and Fitness winner of the Teen division. Lee’s platform is “Promoting Civic Awareness Among Today’s Youth.” She wants teens across the area to have a better understanding of civic purpose and American democracy.

Miss Cherokee Rose will compete for the title of Miss Georgia 2013 in June for the chance to represent the state in the Miss America competition.

Miss Cherokee Rose’s Outstanding Teen, and Miss Cherokee Fair’s Outstanding Teen will both compete for the title of Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen who will go on to complete for Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.
