While many other students were enjoying their last weekend before school started, Cub Scout Pack 6410 and families spent a particularly sunny Sunday weeding the school’s two courtyards, pruning shrubbery and installing mulch at the school located at 2275 Bascomb-Carmel Road.
The troop was also assisted by members of the Carmel community during the beautification day as many of the weeds — all pulled by hand — were taller than most of the Cub Scouts.
Pack 6410 consists largely of Carmel students but is formally based at His Hands Church in Woodstock. The pack was approached by administration last spring about maintaining the school’s two courtyards.
Assistant Principal Lynda Wallace, who helped organize the cleanup day, said she and her husband, Chris Wallace, worked side-by-side with all the volunteers.
Wallace said the day was a great way to start the school year.
“I cannot thank everyone enough for the amazing job they did in one incredibly hot afternoon,” Wallace said. “We could not have done it without each and everyone who came out to help.”
Principal Keith Bryant said he saw the improvements the day after the work had been completed and was impressed by all of the troop’s hard work.
“You can tell they put a lot of time and hard work into it,” Bryant said. “It looks great.”
Bryant said he appreciated all of the support the school receives from the community and especially from the Scouts.
“It’s really a great kind of partnership we’ve got going on and it’s benefitted the school greatly,” Bryant said.
Participating Cub Scout members include Nick Anastasi, Chris Evans, Nick Evans, Nick Fowler, Zack Fowler, Brendan LeGrand, Charlie Pardo, Michael John Roderick, Jackson Rodriguez, Hunter Torbush, Carson Vitrano and Chandler Vitrano.
Other youth volunteers who participated were Luke Everest, Abbie Parkes, Delilah Parkes, Zack Weber and Madison Wisted.
Cub Scout Pack 6410 is also planning to plant two trees and an array of fall flowers in Carmel’s two empty garden beds in the coming months and will also continue maintaining the grounds.
