Officials with the city of Canton say East Main Street is likely to remain closed for several more hours from Dr. John T. Pettit Street to Muriel Street.

Canton Director of Street Development David Cangemi said Tuesday morning that a tree fell overnight and struck power lines on the road, forcing the closure.

Some homes in the area were also without power during the night.

“There’s a lot of debris,” Cangemi said, adding that the tree was hollow and likely weakened by the recent storms coming through the city.

Cangemi said crews have been working to clear the road and hope to have it reopened by 2:30 p.m. at the latest.
