Alumni and supporters of Oak Grove Elementary School in Acworth will have a chance to reunite Sunday at the school’s third reunion.
The reunion is planned in the school gym from 2 to 5 p.m.
The reunion is for students who went to Oak Grove any time from the 1930s to the 1970s, as well as for faculty, staff and neighbors of the school during that period.
The reunion will allow alumni to remember the “good old Oak Grove School days,” say reunion planners Linda Stanton and Linda Futral
With the county’s help of matching half the funds, the parents of the Oak Grove community raised enough funds to build the gym in the 1960s, organizers said. The gym was attached to the original four-room school building which opened around 1956.
According to the school’s website today, the middle-class neighborhood grew as nearby Atlanta grew, beginning with farmhouses intermixed with suburban houses and eventually changing into a busy metro community. The current residents include families whose grandparents lived in the neighborhood to younger two-career families, attracted by the school’s reputation for academic excellence.
The last renovation of the school was in 1993, and today is Oak Grove Elementary School Fine Arts Academy and has grades kindergarten through fourth grade.
The first two Oak Grove reunions in 2009 and 2011 were great successes, with many former students and faculty in attendance. Organizers for this year’s reunion hope for an even better turnout.
Those interested in attending the reunion can go to www.OakGroveReunion.myevent.com.
Anyone with pictures from the first two reunions can download them to the site or email them to LindaMcBen@yahoo.com. Senders of past reunion pictures are asked to identify the people in the pictures.
Volunteers are needed for this year’s reunion, as well. Tasks include parking, publicity, decorations, photography and others.
To volunteer send an email to Linda (McPherson) Stanton or Linda (Bennett) Futral at LindaMcBen@yahoo.com, or go to the “Contact Us” page on the reunion website.
