CANTON — Cherokee County’s two Chattahoochee Technical College campuses saw more than 2,000 students enrolled within the first week of fall semester classes.

Rebecca Long, spokeswoman for the college, said 2,094 students or 17.4 percent of Chattahoochee Tech’s enrollment call Cherokee County home.

“This is second only to Cobb County,” Long said.

About 70 percent of students at the Canton campus and 50 percent of the students at the Woodstock Campus are Cherokee County residents.

Following the drop/add period and late registration, 12,021 students are enrolled throughout the school’s eight campuses. In comparison, there were approximately 11,500 students registered the first day last year.

“While there have been reports that enrollment could be down at many local area colleges and universities, the numbers looked very good for CTC in terms of first-day enrollment,” Long said.

The new school year began Aug. 17 and at all of the school’s eight metro Atlanta campuses, there were about 3,900 new students on the rolls.

Ron Newcomb, the college’s president, said this time of year is always

exciting.

“We have new programs beginning and new students joining us for the first time,” Newcomb said. “We also welcome back students who are finishing their degrees, diplomas and certificates this year and are eager to help them start or continue their careers.”

Canton’s campus has 903 students enrolled while Woodstock’s campus serves approximately 498.

The college’s Marietta and North Metro campuses still remain the top two campus choices for students with 69 percent of students taking at least one class at one of those two locations.

New this year, the Canton campus now has additional program offerings in clinical laboratory technology, environmental technology, building and facilities maintenance technology and logistics and supply chain management. Marietta and North Metro’s campuses have these courses as well.

These new programs bring the college’s total number of certificate, diploma and associate degree level offerings to more than 70, Long said.

Online classes also continue to grow in popularity with 37 percent of students taking at least one online class. Almost 1,400 students are exclusively registered for online classes this term, with 783 students from Cherokee County taking online classes.
