Honored female athlete alumnae from each high school shared triumphs of each school’s girls sports programs for the year: from left, Emily Saunders, Joy Clarkston, Camille Thomas, Lauren Dodd, Haley Brannon and Nikki Roddy.
More than 500 Cherokee County School District high school female student-athletes participated in the eighth annual National Girls and Women Sports Day Celebration.
Coordinated by Victoria Brown, softball coach at Etowah High School, the Feb. 4 program at Woodstock High School recognized the impact of Title IX, the federal law calling for gender equity in athletics in schools, and celebrated the successes of the various girls’ sports teams at all CCSD high schools this year.
Dr. Katherine Bradley, a lifelong champion of women’s athletics at the high school and college level and athletic director at Cartersville High School, gave the keynote address, followed by an honored female athlete alumna or coach from each high school.
Former Woodstock High School Principal Bill Sebring, who coached both baseball and softball at Woodstock and Sequoyah and served as athletic director and principal, was recognized as CCSD’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day Honorary Coach. Sebring brought substantial improvements to the girls’ athletics program and facilities while principal at Cherokee High School and was instrumental in the creation of the county’s National Girls and Women Sports Day celebration.
This year’s school honorees were Camille Thomas, Cherokee High; Haley Brannon, Creekview; Lauren Dodd, Etowah; Joy Clarkston, River Ridge; Emily Saunders, Sequoyah; and Nikki Roddy, Woodstock.
