The Furtah Prep boys basketball team won the Georgia Independent School Association Region 4AA championship Friday night, defeating Arlington Christian 71-66.

Milso Sicimic led the Falcons with 17 points, while Nils Dejworek finished just shy of a double-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.

Also in double figures were Same Wilson (14 points, eight assists) and Paul Bokeloh (14 points, six rebounds, five steals). Amir Savon led Furtah with 10 rebounds, while adding three blocks and seven points.

Coach Eugene Fries called the game a “total team effort.”

In Furtah’s two previous games against Arlington, it had won by margins of 37 and 15 points.

“(Arlington) came out with a very good game plan and played strong aggressive defense,” Fries said, “but our guys never lost their composure and never panicked.”

Furtah led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter and 40-31 at the half.

“I was very proud of how, even though we didn’t play our best (Friday), we found a way to get every loose ball and made some free throws late in the game to seal the win,” Fries said. “Milos really carried us offensively. Every time Arlington would make a run at us, Milos seemed to hit a shot that calmed their momentum.”

With the win, Furtah advanced to the GISA state tournament and will face Southwest Georgia Academy tonight at 7 p.m. at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton.

Fries said his players have to commit to playing hard-nose defense and focus on winning one game at a time.

“Now, it’s a one-game season,” Fries said. “We have to continue to be patient on offense and continue having success on the defensive end of the court. We have four games left to win a state title, and each of those games will be tougher than the last.”
