NORCROSS, Ga. (AP) — Gwinnett County police say an officer responding to a reported home invasion fatally shot a man during a confrontation.

Police say it appears a man tried to force his way into an apartment in Norcross where two kids were home alone around 7:30 a.m. Monday. The kids made it out safely and contacted a neighbor who called police.

The first responding officer encountered the suspect, who was leaving the apartment. Police say the officer felt his life was threatened and responded by shooting the man.

The suspect was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he died. The officer wasn't injured.

Investigators from the police department and the Gwinnett County district attorney's office are investigating.
