Organizers say their annual Ash Wednesday march is meant to raise awareness about a federal immigration detention system they say puts profits above humane treatment of detainees.
Immigration officials say they’ve been working to improve conditions at the nation’s detention facilities.
This year’s march includes two classes of New Jersey high school students who are studying social justice. They’re joined by religious leaders, immigrants from a variety of backgrounds and activists pushing for immigration reform.
The march will end with a vigil Wednesday night at a detention center in Elizabeth.
