Campaign funding reports filed before the Jan. 8 special election show that some candidates raised in excess of $10,000 in less than a month for the whirlwind election.

Brandon Beach, the eventual winner of the election to represent state Senate District 21, reported $10,932 in cash contributions and no in-kind contributions in a Dec. 31 report to the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission. He reported expenditures of $7,310 and a cash balance of $3,622.

As of the Dec. 31 reporting period, Senate candidate Sean Jerguson reported a total of $23,233 in cash contributions and no in-kind contributions. The report lists $1,207 in expenditures, giving Jerguson a balance of $22,026 as of Dec. 31.

In the yet-to-be-concluded race for House District 21, candidate Scot Turner reported total in-kind contributions of $11,593 and cash contributions of $15,430 as of Dec. 31.

Turner reported $15,217 in cash expenditures as of Dec. 31, leaving him with a cash balance of $214.

Turner listed a $2,500 and a $500 contribution from himself.

Other major contributors include Rick Davies, $1,000 and Big Woods Goods, $500.

In a report required 15 days before the special election, Brian Laurens reported a total of $13,440 in cash contributions and $3,000 in in-kind donations. He also reported a $10,000 loan.

He reported $4,131 in expenditures, leaving him with a $9,309 balance.

Laurens’ top contributors were Rep. Sam Teasley at $500; WIN, $500; and Rep. Rick Jasperse, $400.

Holly LaBerge of the Campaign Finance Commission said candidates running in a January 2013 special election were not required to file on Dec. 31 but were required to file a 15-day report.

Turner and Laurens will face each other in a runoff for the House seat on Feb. 5 and will be required to file another campaign finance report six days before the runoff.

As of Dec. 31, House candidate Natalie Bergeron, the sole Democrat in either race, reported a total of $4,855 in cash contributions and no in-kind contributions. She reported $2,784 in cash expenditures, leaving a cash balance of $2,101.

The largest contributors include Joseph Leman, $1,000 and $1,500 and the Cherokee County Democratic Committee, $500.

In a 15-day report, House candidate Kenneth Mimbs reported $400 in in-kind contributions and $250 in cash contributions. He reported no cash expenditures.
