“They were able to load up the box to stop the run, so we had to answer with our vertical passing game,” Northwest Whitfield coach Josh Robinson said. “We have a pretty good quarterback, and we have multiple guys that are weapons for us.”
After a scoreless first quarter where both teams mounted threatening drives, the Bruins (3-1) cracked the scoreboard first when Tevin McDaniel returned a punt 69 yards to the Knights’ 6-yard line, setting up a Chris Tinson rushing score.
Northwest Whitfield’s Caleb Bowie then intercepted River Ridge quarterback Steven Spears, setting the Bruins up at the Knights’ 28-yard line. On the ensuing play, Ledford found A.J. Orozco for his first scoring strike of the night.
Austin Terrell answered the Bruins’ second score, returning the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to the Knights’ 46. E.J. Ellis, who was seeing his first action of the season, gashed the Bruins for 49 yards on two carries, capping the drive with a 21-yard rushing score to pull the Knights (1-4) within five points.
“(Ellis) did about what I thought he would,” River Ridge coach Robert Braucht said. “We tried to give him the ball as much as possible to get him back in shape.”
However, Northwest Whitfield responded quickly with a 62-yard scoring pass from Ledford to McDaniel less than a minute later to stake an 18-7 halftime lead.
River Ridge missed an opportunity to put some pressure on the Bruins when it failed to convert for a score after recovering a fumble on the second play of the second half.
Northwest Whitfield ran most of the third
quarter clock down, and kicker Brian Villa connected for a 32-yard field goal with 4:44 remaining in the period.
After a Knights three-and-out, Ledford connected for consecutive passes of 35 and 36 yards finding Oshea Hill for the score putting the Bruins up 28-7.
The Knights tried to keep it interesting when Spears found Liam McGuiness for a 15-yard scoring strike with 5:26 left in the game. However, River Ridge failed to field an onside kick and Ledford threw a 21-yard strike for his fourth score to put the game away.
