Mark Wallace Maguire, director of Cherokee Life and Cobb Life magazines, recently won first place, Humorous Commentary, in the Magazines category of the Green Eyeshade Awards.

The contest, sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists and now in its 63rd year, recognizes the best journalism in an 11-state competition across the southeastern United States.

Maguire’s column, “First! ... and the 5-year- old” appeared in the October 2012 edition of Cobb Life. The winners were announced May 8.

“Cherokee Life is well-received by our readers and an extremely popular part of our newspaper,” said Tribune Managing Editor Rebecca Johnston. “We congratulate Mark Maguire on this prestigious and well-deserved award in recognition of his work.”

Maguire had previously won second-and third-place awards in the Humorous and Serious Commentary categories of the Green Eyeshade Awards, but this marked his first first-place award.
