CANTON — After running a red light and fleeing from a deputy, a 30-year-old man died Tuesday night when he crossed the center line on Bells Ferry Road and collided head-on with another vehicle, authorities said.

Four others suffered non-life threatening injuries, a spokesman with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said.

The killed driver was identified as Jemail Raymont Jones, 29, of Canton, said Gordy Wright, spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol.

Wright said Jones was driving at a high rate of speed prior to the accident.

The incident began around 9:30 p.m. when a Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over Jones’ Pontiac Grand Prix for a traffic violation, Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Baker said the driver fled the area, ran a red light and then drove north on Bells Ferry Road.

“The deputy advised 911 by radio that he only had traffic charges against the suspect and would not be pursuing the vehicle,” Baker said.

The deputy also headed north on Bells Ferry Road after turning off his emergency lights and siren. When the deputy arrived at the intersection of Bells Ferry and Butterworth roads, he was flagged down by an unidentified person and told there had been a collision north of that location, Baker said.

Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, said emergency personnel from his agency and the Canton Police Department responded to the accident shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Cavender said Jones was entrapped and pronounced dead on the scene.

The two other male occupants in the vehicle, Ricardo de San Pedro, 20, and Matthew Barron, 28, both of Canton, were taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, Cavender said.

The two had injuries including neck, hip and back pain, and one had a large contusion on his head, Cavender said.

The two people in the other vehicle involved in the crash, a burgundy Chevrolet Colorado, were also taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Jennifer Myers, 24, complained of pain in her ankle and Michael Myers, 27, had a cut to his forehead, Cavender said.

Cavender said both lanes of Bells Ferry Road were blocked until the vehicles and debris were cleared from the roadway.

Wright said the crash was being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.
