Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens will be roasted by friends during the 9th Annual Charity Roast next month to benefit the local Boys and Girls Club.
Olens, who is slated to speak on Wednesday night at the convention, is expected to draw a large crowd for this year’s roast.
The roast, which raises money for the Malon D. Mimms Boys & Girls Club in Canton, is set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center.
The event usually draws more than 500 attendees and typically raises $75,000 each year for the club, which opened on Univeter Road in November 2007. Last year the roast, which featured U.S. Congressman Tom Price (R-Roswell), brought in $80,000.
Roast Committee Chair and Cherokee County Manager Jerry Cooper said he hopes this year to raise as much as $100,000 to help the local nonprofit.
Tickets are $75 per person and include a cocktail reception, live entertainment and a buffet of gourmet hors d’oeuvres. The event also includes a silent auction.
On Thursday, Olens said he was contacted a few months ago and was delighted to participate.
“The Boys and Girls Club is a great organization that changes children’s lives,” he said. “I appreciate the great work they do in the community.”
The Boys and Girls Club serves more than 1,100 children and teenagers in Cherokee County.
Before he was elected in 2010 as Georgia’s current attorney general, Olens was Cobb’s commission chairman for eight years. He and his wife, Lisa, have two children and live in east Cobb.
Roastees for this year’s event include Cherokee County State Court Judge Alan Jordan, Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee, Cobb County Chamber of Commerce President & CEO David Connell and Cherokee County Republican Party Precinct Manager John Wallace.
Cooper said the funds raised at the event help the club provide “after school services, leadership development programs and a safe haven for at-risk and disadvantaged youth in our community.”
“By pulling together, we can make a difference,” he added.
