Open to all ages and levels of expertise, the contest begins at 9:30 a.m.
Ribbons and prizes will be awarded provided by Cherokee County Farm Bureau and local merchants.
Finalists will compete in the Cherokee Pie Challenge Aug. 24, where they will compete with winners from other farmers markets in Cherokee County.
According to the contest rules, pies must be made with at least one ingredient that is grown locally and it does not have to be in season — home canned, dried or frozen ingredients will be acceptable.
Points will be added for fresh prepared crusts, but it is not required. Sweet or savory pies can be entered, and cooks can bring more than one, the rules say.
The recipe should be available for publication by Cherokee County Farm Bureau. Photographs of the pies will be taken before the contest begins.
Contestants do not need to be Cherokee County residents.
Categories are youths 18 and younger, adult 18 and older, seniors 60 and older and professional.
Bakers can enter more than one Pie Day contest, but may represent only one market at the finals. The second place winner from one of the markets will compete in the case of more than one win by a contestant.
Pies must be in place by 9:30 a.m. Registration can be done at the Farm Bureau table or in advance by contacting the Cherokee County Farm Bureau office.
Judges will announce the winners at 11 a.m.
The pie eating contest begins at 10:30 a.m. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded for children. Those who would like to enter can register at the Farm Bureau table.
Other Cherokee pie contest sites are Pie Day at Woodstock Farmers Market on July 6 and Pie Week Championship at Waleska Farmers Market with a pie eating contest on July 15 and a pie baking contest July 18.
