Prep Roundup: Etowah boys add two wins

The Etowah boys tennis team beat Creekview 5-0 on Wednesday and Roswell 4-1 on Thursday.

In the Roswell match, Kevin Mendes won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Jake Pollack earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2.

Eric Matthews and Austin Sparks delivered a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while Briggs Darrah and Troy Wilms won 6-2 6-2 at No. 2.

Against Creekview, Mendes earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory and Taylor Barie collected a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. Starks only lost two points at No. 3 singles.

Matthews teamed with Tom Wallner at No. 1 doubles for a 6-2, 6-4 triumph, while Davis Henderson and Wesley Summers were 6-2, 6-4 winners at No. 2.

Etowah (4-1, 1-0 Region 5AAAAAA) is at the Lassiter T3 Tournament today and Saturday.

Walton 3, Woodstock 2: No. 2 singles was the deciding factor as the Wolverines lost the battle between potential Region 5AAAAAA contenders.

Woodstock’s Eric Hollar took Walton’s Francis Yang into a first-set tiebreaker, but he ultimately lost 7-6 (3), 6-3.

David Draghiceanu battled through a pair of tiebreakers to win 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) at No. 1 singles. Evan Zaner also had to battle for his 7-5, 5-7, 10-2 win at No. 3.

Woodstock (1-3, 0-1) will face Woodland-Bartow today as part of the Mountain Invitational at Kennesaw Mountain.


Sequoyah 3, Riverwood 1:
Darkness prevented the final point from being played out, but the Lady Chiefs had already clinched the Region 7AAAAA victory.

Sequoyah (2-0, 2-0) dominated the singles points, with Taylor Dodd and Ariel Schnieder only allowing a total of three games between them. Montana Gilbert won 6-4 in the first set at No. 3 before darkness set it.

The No. 2 doubles team of Rachel Weaver and Sydney Webb also won, by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.

Sequoyah will host North Springs for another region match Monday.


Kennesaw Mountain 5, River Ridge 1:
Brooke DeSantis scored the Lady Knights’ lone goal as they lost a road game against the Class AAAAAA team.

DeSantis scored off a corner kick by Allison Clarke-Hall.

River Ridge (1-1) will travel to county rival Etowah on Saturday.


Lassiter 19, Woodstock 5:
Jaclyn Chiesa scored three goals to lead the Lady Wolverines, but they couldn’t keep up with the perennial state power in an Area 2AAAAAA game.

Nicole Agner and Anna Timm also scored for Woodstock, which will travel to archrival Etowah today.
