The STARS drama group is presenting “Annie” tonight and Saturday at the Canton Theatre with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
STARS drama group began 10 years ago with a small group of homeschooled children and has grown to include adults and children from all school settings.
Tisha Gotte is the director and founder of STARS Drama and has been educating and directing children for the last 30 years.
Her love of children and drama has allowed her to direct and write plays that have been performed in churches, schools and theaters. The production of “Annie” features a cast of 35 from age 6 and older.
“Annie” was based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie, and produced on Broadway with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and the book by Thomas Meehan.
The original Broadway production opened in 1977 and ran for nearly six years, setting what was billed as a record for the Alvin Theatre.
It spawned numerous productions in many countries, as well as national tours, and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical’s songs “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” are among its most popular numbers. Tickets are available at www.tix.com. Cost is $12 for adults and $10 for children 10 and younger.
