School Board Member Should Pay Attention

DEAR EDITOR: After attending the last five Cherokee County School Board meetings, I have consistently noticed something that bothers me. Why does my CCSB District 1 representative Kelly Marlow spend most of each board meeting seated on the stage texting on her device while others are discussing important topics?

Who is she talking to and why? Is it the person always standing in the back of the room that she meets with on breaks and who usually brings her coffee? Who is he? He is always texting, too.

The board only meets once a month for a couple of hours. Couldn’t she just pay attention and participate on her own like all of the rest of the board does? Something seems fishy to me.

It’s like she needs guidance from someone to participate in the meetings. I understand that this is her first time in an elected position. But it doesn’t seem that she prepares very well and she only speaks to agenda items that concern her and her political agenda.

During her campaign she repeatedly promised us here in her district that she would prepare our public school kids to “compete in the global market” through her “bold new ideas.” But all she ever seems to talk about is a two- year-old audit that has been beat to death already and her own upcoming Code of Ethics hearing.

Why does she never propose something that would actually benefit our public school kids, like maybe an enhanced learning program or how to make better use of existing resources in our public schools? Things that actually matter. Wouldn’t that be more beneficial and productive?

I have always been a proponent of giving a person a chance, especially our elected officials. After all, they were elected by the people, for the people.

But it’s been nine months now and I cannot see that she has made even one positive contribution to our public school kids’ futures. And that is her job and should be her focus.

If she doesn’t intend to do what we elected her to do, what she promised us that she would do, then she should resign her post and let someone else try.

Mr Reed is grossly misinformed. Ms Marlow nor any other board member has their personal cell phone available to them during the meetings. Board Members Rob Usher and Patsy Jordan can confirm this. All board members do however have tablet devices which they use to peruse the agenda that is being discussed.

This is just more personal attacks that this media source is all to happy to publish without bothering to investigate.

Ms Marlow won't be resigning due to the ignorant request of a misinformed citizen.
