William Wilson Heaton, 22, of Rydal faces several charges after surrendering early Wednesday evening to authorities at the Clarke County Jail. The charges include drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident, The Athens Banner-Herald reported.
A judge set his bond at $50,000 during a Thursday court hearing.
Emily Bowman of Woodstock was walking in the grass next to an Athens road on Feb. 16 when a pickup truck left the road, hit her and then fled, police said.
Officers spent dozens of hours reviewing video from about 10 surveillance cameras during their investigation, police said.
Heaton’s attorney, Anthony Perotta, declined to say whether Heaton was driving the pickup when it struck Bowman.
Bowman remains unresponsive, but has made significant progress in her recovery, her father told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She’s now breathing on her own and her family is hopeful she’ll eventually be able to move to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta for continued rehabilitation, Dale Bowman said.
“That’s all we want is baby steps,” Bowman told the Atlanta newspaper. “We’ve got plenty of time to get her better. But it’s going to be such a long process. What a big interruption in her life.”
