A Cherokee High School student is using his senior project as an opportunity to help feed the hungry while promoting fitness in the community.

Mason Ward is hosting the Burn the Fat, Feed the Hungry Family Fitness Food Drive on Saturday at Envision Health Studio off Bells Ferry Road in Woodstock.

“Bringing families together for a fun day of fitness and helping those in need is a great way to solve the growing obesity epidemic in our country,” Ward said.

Ward’s interest in sports marketing and community service is the reason for his choice in this project.

The senior is doing his research paper on fighting childhood obesity, and the event is one way he feels he can make a difference while learning more about how to promote community events as a possible major in college.

Ward is coordinating the event for his senior project with Envision Health Studio’s Get Fit Give Back Program.

His facilitator, Laura Mikszan, is co-owner of Envision Health Studio, whose mission is to encourage healthier lifestyles for the families in order to help strengthen the community and family bonds.

Ward has selected MUST Ministries in Canton as the beneficiary of Saturday’s event.

The event is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is open to individuals and families.

Participation is free, with a donation of a sack full of non-perishable items for MUST Cherokee food bank.

Items needed are canned meats, peanut butter, jelly, and other non- perishable items.

The event will offer fun activities, fitness games, and challenges for whole family. There will be push-up contests, relay races, a bounce house, boot camp, hip hop dance classes, and healthy nutrition samples.

“Mason really understands and is doing a wonderful job. He is a high school senior that definitely understands giving back to the community. He is doing a really great job for the event. Not only are we giving back, he is going to educate the children on fitness and health,” Mikszan said. “I always enjoy working with the senior projects, it is such a great program.”
