Years ago, while working for an Atlanta radio station, I was assigned the job of interviewing Andy Williams. I have always been a fan of his and my wife had what could be described as the 1970’s version of “Beiber Fever.” When we were dating, we used to put Andy on the stereo (look it up, kids) when we were feeling romantic.
There will now be a slight pause for our daughters to say, “EWW!”
I asked my wife to go to the interview with me but, to my surprise, she said, “No, thanks.” Her reason had to do with the fact that she is nearly 6 feet tall, and Andy was a little less than a foot shorter. She didn’t want to tower over him and make them both feel weird.
When I got to the interview, I told Andy the story and he pointed to this gorgeous 6 foot plus tall woman in the corner of the room.
“That’s my date,” he said with a totally understandable smile.
Then he proceeded to autograph his latest album (look it up, kids), “To Jannis, you should have come. Love, Andy.” It is a prized possession of hers to this day.
Rest in peace, good sir. You will be missed by all of us who love good music (look it up, kids.)
