MARIETTA — Woodstock’s defense played well enough to upset Lassiter on Friday night.

After the Trojans had gotten used to rolling up first-half points, the Wolverines gave them fits by mixing up their blitzes and playing solid man defense.

But with the game still up for grabs going into the fourth quarter, Lassiter scored twice — the second on an interception return — to pull away and prevail 30-7 in a Region 5AAAAAA game at Frank Fillmann Stadium.

Woodstock (0-5, 0-2) is still looking for its first win, but in the Wolverines’ defense, their schedule has hardly been easy. They’ve gone up against three state-ranked teams in Kell, Walton and Lassiter.

“We just have to keep playing the way we’re playing,” Woodstock coach Brent Budde said. “We’ve played two top-10 teams the last two weeks. I would like to see us execute a little better. The effort is there, but we have to clean up our execution a little.”

Lassiter quarterback Eddie Printz threw for 233 yards and a touchdown against Woodstock, but the Wolverines’ secondary often made it difficult for him to find open receivers. They forced Lassiter (5-0, 2-0) to punt four times in the second half, giving Woodstock’s offense opportunities to score points.

“We had to mix up our pressure,” Budde said. “If you keep giving them the same looks, that quarterback is going to pick you apart. Our guys did a great job covering.”

Unfortunately, the Wolverines couldn’t come through. They had to punt three times and were stopped on fourth down twice before Lassiter’s Patrick Levandoski ended their final drive with an interception return for a touchdown.

Woodstock’s best scoring opportunity came late in the third quarter, when the Wolverines started on their own 7-yard line, trailing 16-7.

The drive began impressively enough, with a 38-yard pass from Alex Motsinger to Josh Kuza as the quarterback avoided a safety. That followed with a 24-yard run by Jean Boureau to put Woodstock on Lassiter’s 31.

Andrew Lenhart followed with a 5-yard run to put Woodstock inside the 30. But his next two carries only went for 1 yard, and he was stuffed for no gain on fourth down.

Once Woodstock’s offense began running out of time late in the fourth quarter, the Trojans stepped up and secured the win with 1:53 left when Blake Wilson ran a reverse for a 25-yard touchdown.

“(Woodstock) always gives you enough looks, and you have to fight tooth-and-nail,” Lassiter coach Jep Irwin said. “You just have to execute well, and we didn’t do that.”

Early highlights for Woodstock started with a first-quarter interception by Max Keeton in the Lassiter red zone that ended an eight-play drive.

Even though Lassiter scored first and missed the extra point, Woodstock stepped up on its next drive and took the lead when Motsinger connected with Sharrone Gates for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 5:53 left. The touchdown capped a 13-play drive that chewed up 6 minutes.

Afterwards, Lassiter’s front seven contained Woodstock’s ground attack. The Wolverines finished the game with just 100 yards rushing and 115 passing.
