About 14 children took advantage of winter break from school Wednesday to learn a little something about baking cupcakes.
The Kids Baking Camp at Cupcakelicious in Woodstock gave participants the chance to bake up some cupcakes, make buttercream frosting and decorate like a professional.
“It was a full class,” said owner Lee Staten. “I actually like to do a little baking 101 to teach them about batter. They pick batter — today it was chocolate and vanilla bean — and then they bake them themselves.”
Cupcakelicious is a locally owned gourmet bakery offering scratch-made cupcakes, cakes and other tasty treats.
“We do not use cake mixes or icing mixes, rather we use the finest ingredients to make our products fresh from ‘scratch’ — flour, sugar, brown sugar, confectioners’ sugar, milk, buttermilk, eggs, cream, cream cheese, and the like. We believe this allows us to offer the best quality and taste for our customers and their families,” Staten said.
While youngsters got to get into the act during winter break, classes for adults are regularly planned once each month.
The next Adult Baking Class will be March 10 from 2 to 3 p.m. The class is limited to 10 bakers. The March class will be making two pairs of stiletto high heels out of cupcakes.
“It is a full-size shoe,” Staten said.
In April, the adult class will learn to bake gluten-free treats. Advance registration is required. Cost per participant is $30. The shop is also planning a St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
“We will have several beer-themed cupcakes during March 15 to 17 weekend. Customers can put in a special order now,” she said.
Regular cupcake flavors include: Chocolate Vanilla Birthday Cake, Double Chocolate, Double Vanilla Birthday Cake, Oreo, Red Velvet, Strawberry, Sweet & Salty, Vanilla Chocolate Birthday Cake and Wedding Cake.
The shop also offers 11 flavors daily — nine daily flavors and two rotating special flavors.
Special flavors include Banana Cream Pie, Snickerdoodle, Mud Pie, Very Cherry, Elvis and Thin Mint among others that are rotated. A listing is available on the shop’s Facebook page.
Gluten-free cupcakes are offered Thursday, Saturday and Sunday as well as any day of the week by special order.
Located on Main Street in historic Downtown Woodstock, Cupcakelicious is located in a building that dates to about 1900.
The building was originally the site of George Fowler’s grocery store. The shop is across from the new development where restaurants Pure Taqueria and Canyons Burger are located.
