Police are still trying to make headway in the arrest of a man accused of hitting a Woodstock teenager Saturday morning, leaving her in critical condition.

Emily Bowman, 19, was reportedly hit by a pickup truck while walking in the grass along the roadway in Athens just after 3 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told police the truck left the road and hit her before fleeing. Officers found the truck soon afterwards but couldn’t find the driver.

Bowman’s uncle, Neal Bowman, said his niece had recently moved back to Georgia from Mississippi and was visiting her best friend who attends the University of Georgia when the accident happened.

“We should be getting a big status report this afternoon,” Bowman said just before 3 p.m. Monday. “The neuro doctor is going to interpret her CAT scan.”

He said Emily Bowman has been unconscious ever since the accident and the doctors’ main concerns at this point is that his niece still hasn’t responded to any request to move any body parts.

“She does involuntary twitching, which means her spine is OK,” he explained.

Bowman said about 10 family members and friends have been in the waiting room at Athens Regional Hospital in Clarke County ever since the young lady was hit.

He also said police came in earlier today and told Bowman’s father, Dale Bowman, that they are getting closer to maybe pressing charges against the driver of the truck.

“He apparently deleted his text and phone messages after the accident but police said they should be able to recover those,” Bowman said.

Emily Bowman is a Woodstock High School graduated who attended Kennesaw State University her freshman year of college.

I really hope this kid makes it through this, and that the cops/prosecutors can nail that gutless little weasel who did this to her. I saw somehwere else that the guy they believe did this had "lawyered up" already. Probably not a bad idea from his perspective, but he needs to go to prison for a very, very long time.

God, please take care of her.
