Athens-Clarke commissioners say they are delaying a referendum on Sunday sales until the presidential primaries next year. The primary date has not been scheduled, but Georgia’s usually is held in March.
Commissioners considered placing Sunday sales on the ballot in November but decided not to because of a vote at that time on continuing a 1 percent sales tax for local schools.
Commissioners say they are concerned that Sunday sales could draw opponents to the polls who also would vote against the Education Local Option Sales Tax.
The Legislature passed a bill earlier this year allowing cities and counties to put Sunday retail beer, wine and liquor sales before voters.
