Michael Bailey, 53, of Marietta was arrested Thursday night at a Motel 6, 2360 Delk Road SE, near the intersection with Interstate 75, where police say he was staying in a room.
Bailey is facing one charge of theft by taking, but another is pending, Officer David Baldwin said. He won’t face child cruelty charges because the alleged crimes weren’t violent in nature, Baldwin said.
Bailey and the young boy entered the RaceTrac gas station on Delk Road near Interstate 75 at about 9:30 a.m. and tried to shoplift ice cream and cheese, but were stopped by a clerk, Baldwin said. Bailey apologized, saying he left his wallet outside, police said. The pair left, and Bailey hotwired and stole a red Honda Civic, according to police. The car, however, was low on gas, so he left it at the Hardee’s restaurant across the street and hotwired and stole a second car, a white Honda Civic, from Mink’s Package Store, about a quarter mile east on Delk Road, around 10:20 a.m., Baldwin said.
The white Honda Civic was found at the Motel 6, about “three businesses over,” Baldwin said.
Both cars were recovered, and aside from whatever damaged the vehicles sustained from the hotwiring, no injuries or damages were reported, Baldwin said.
Baldwin said the boy is with his parents.
