Daniel Perez was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital after police discovered him around 9:45 p.m. sitting in the front seat of his car with a gunshot wound in the parking lot of Marquis Place apartment complex, 1029 Franklin Road SE, near the intersection with Delk Road.
Witnesses reported seeing the gunman fleeing the scene on foot. He is described as a black male, between 20 and 30 years old, between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 9 inches tall, thin, and wearing dark-colored jeans and a white hooked jacket.
“We think Perez and the suspect are the only ones involved, and we believe that he was shot when he was trying to exit the property,” Marietta Police Officer David Baldwin said.
Police discovered Perez near Building 38 in the south portion of the apartment complex. Baldwin said it looked like he hit two parked cars.
Perez was taken by ambulance to Kennestone, where died around 9 a.m. Thursday.
Police believe only one shot was fired, but Baldwin did not know what kind of gun was used.
He also did not know if Perez or the gunman was a resident of the complex.
Eric Oquendo, a leasing officer at the complex, said he was unable to comment on the shooting because they are working with Marietta police to identify and possibly apprehend a suspect.
The Marietta Police Department is asking anyone with information to call Detective Merritt at (770) 794-5324.
