CANTON — Only two rezoning applications were submitted throughout the county by the Nov. 18 deadline, both in unincorporated Cherokee.

Ahmad Ghadamyari is requesting the county rezone 1.32 acres at 7977 and 7961 Highway 92, near Industrial Drive, west of Woodstock, from light industrial to general commercial.

Ghadamyari plans to build an assisted living facility with a personal home care component.

James and Margaret Brock are requesting the county rezone 7.25 acres at 2134 East Cherokee Drive, southeast of Holly Springs, from R-80 residential to agricultural, to continue operating their family farm.

Brock said the property has been family owned for 31 years and he’s operated a farm for that long.

He said he recently learned from a representative from the Cherokee County Marshal’s Office that the property had been rezoned low-density residential after neighbors complained about the number of chickens he had on the property.

“I decided to rezone it to what it was being used for,” he said.

Both cases will be considered by the county’s planning commission on Jan. 3 and by the Board of Commissioners on Jan. 17.

The two requests were submitted to the Cherokee County Planning and Zoning Department, which serves unincorporated Cherokee, Ball Ground and Waleska.

There were three rezoning requests submitted last month throughout the county, and three filed last November. So far this year, 16 cases have been submitted to county or city zoning departments, down from 29 filed during the same time period in 2010. Of those 16, 12 were filed with the county.

The city of Canton has only received one request this year, which is equivalent to the number filed during the same time period last year.

Holly Springs hasn’t received any requests all year, down from two it received by the close of November 2010.

Woodstock did not receive any requests this month, down from one city-initiated request it received in October and two it received by this point last year. The city has only received one request in 2011, down from two it received by this time last year. Zoning Administrator Patti Hart said she hasn’t heard from anyone to anticipate any requests coming for the early months of 2012.

The city of Nelson did not received any rezoning requests this year or last year.
