DEAR EDITOR:

By now everyone should have seen or heard one of the advertisements begging us to vote for another penny sales tax for TSPLOST. The “Georgia Chamber of Commerce” is spending millions on this campaign which is supposedly funded by “Private Interest”. They say if we just vote another penny sale tax all our traffic woes will be fixed.

Don’t believe them.

Look at what will be funded. Over 53 percent will fund mass transit projects. I’m not against funding transit, however funding over $500 million in MARTA capital projects while they already get a penny sales tax is wrong.

Add Atlanta Beltline projects totaling over $600 million. Atlanta will be getting over $1 billion for special interest projects which will have not affect traffic on Interstate 575 or Georgia 400, or any other street.

What is Cherokee county getting? A Highway 140 widening project so we can get to Roswell faster only to sit in traffic on 400.

They promise that after 10 years the tax will “sunset”. Sure it will, just like the promise to remove tollbooths on the Georgia 400 Extension when it was paid off.

If TSPLOST passes it will never go away. If all these penny sales taxes pass some areas could see as much as an extra 10 percent added to every purchase.

Ironically Republicans in state government, the most ethical state government in history, have expanded government and taxed more than state Democrats ever did and boy are state Democrats jealous.

Stop this madness, vote no.

There's so much wrong with your article that i don't even know where to start. You say your aren't against funding transit (which the region needs desperately), yet you scrutinize them for doing so. You mention the projects in atlanta like the beltline (which yes, in many areas will relieve traffic, not to mention create economic development) yet fail to tell your readers about the transit projects giving other travel alternatives to people along the Clifton corridor, the I-20 east corridor, the I-85 north corridor, the 400 north corridor, the I-75 north corridor, and the I-75 south corridor. Also you lie to the people of cherokee county. There are numerous other T-SPLOST projects for cherokee. Also longterm, the county will benefit from commuter/suburban rail or light rail to canton and will immediately benefit from park n' ride on the I-75 corridor transit line and numerous other road projects. And that brings up another fault of this article and your opinion. There are lots of road projects. Over 150 of them in the Atlanta region alone. And the last thing wrong is that you say this tax will raise as much to 10% is some areas and that it will last forever. It is a one percent sales tax, that will last for ten years where it will be up for vote again. The money goes directly to funding transportation projects, not to the general fund. The one thing we do agree on is the fact that this is funding some MARTA capital projects. That is wrong and shouldn't be included in this bill. But don't let that stop you from voting yes. This will establish atlanta as a competitive world class city open for people and buisiness. We can regain our transportation might. It is well worth the 1%. Long term, i think a 1% sales tax in all the metro counties should go to funding for expansion of transportation, and the state should fund for upkeep and capital projects. Also the metro will need a regional transit agency, which could be done by reconfiguring MARTA. So for the good of the Atlanta area, and for all of us Vote Yes.

Mr. Callaway, There is so much wrong with your response but I do know where to start. Fortunately I do have the final project list which is almost 7 Billion dollars worth of projects. I am not against transit but where in TSPLOST is a cohesive regional approach to mass transit? There isn’t one. For that matter where in this plan is the funding for, your words, “rail or light rail to canton”? Again that also is not in the plan. There are no serious plans for any light rail for Cherokee period.

Just how will the Atlanta Beltline relieve traffic on highway 140, highway 20, 575? Well? The truth is the Beltline is a recreational project. It is designed for walking paths, bike, and a very limited trolley. Not a single method to mass move people around Atlanta with any efficiency. It will do nothing for traffic outside Atlanta and little for traffic inside Atlanta. Don’t get me wrong I like the idea but Atlanta alone will benefit and Atlanta alone should pay for it. My god man we have our own special project just like for a river walk. Where is the funding in TSPLOST for it? Isn’t that just as worthy as the Beltline. Who should pay for it?

Now road projects how many more do we need? TSPLOST does not take into account maintenance and up keep. Right now there are state roads in Cherokee County, main state roads that are lacking necessary maintenance. Why? They say well we just don’t have the funds. If they don’t have the funds to maintain what we have why build more that will just fall into disrepair?

I don’t know where you live but I travel an east west route to and from work as the majority does in Cherokee to Cobb and Gwinnett counties . All east west routes have been ignored for years and ignored again with TSPLOST. The Highway 20 widening project was dropped yet again in favor of the 140 project. But again why spend the money if we can’t maintain it.

Anyone who votes for this tax deserves to be repeatedly sheared. It won't solve our traffic concerns but you can bet it will be with us forever, and the state of Georgia will find a way to spend it on other things than for which it was designed as they continue to do now. Someday we will be paying per mile to drive on every road in Georgia. And how much of our tax dollars has gone to our local Chamber of Commerce to be sent to the Georgia Chamber to persuade us in this effort?
