CANTON — A leader in the Canton TEA Party Patriots called a news conference on the steps of the Cherokee County Justice Center on Tuesday to level charges about a campaign contribution one county commissioner received and to call into question contributions to another board member.

About 10 people showed up to hear Carolyn Cosby, chairwoman of the TEA Party organization, read a news release alleging Cherokee Recycling owner Jimmy Bobo made an “illegal attempt” to conceal a campaign contribution to Commissioner Karen Bosch before the 2004 primary election.

In her 10-minute presentation, Cosby also singled out Commissioner Harry Johnston as reporting a significant jump in unidentified campaign contributions in 2008.

Cosby said the group planned to turn over evidence to Cherokee County District Attorney Garry Moss and that members are calling for a full grand jury investigation.

Cosby was flanked by Keith “Eddie” Mahurin, former husband of Bosch, who Cosby said came forward recently with evidence of Bobo’s contributions to his former wife in 2004.

The organization presented a sworn affidavit from Mahurin, which it said it planned to give to Moss.

Cosby said that in 2004, Mahurin — who did not speak or take any questions at the news conference — received a call from Bobo, who wanted to make a contribution to his then-wife’s campaign.

Mahurin alleges Bobo at the time asked for 10 envelopes, placed a $100 bill in each and “wrote various names on the outside,” Cosby said. Bobo then gave the envelopes of money to Mahurin. Georgia law allows only campaign donations of $100 or less.

The names listed on the envelopes, according to Cosby, are: Leon Bobo, Loretta Bobo, David and Pam Bobo, Nancy Sams, Waverly Thornton, Charles Bishop, Weymon Anderson, and Tom and Tracy Bainette.

Cosby said Mahurin then allegedly turned the envelopes over to his wife, and some time much later discovered the envelopes in the attic in his home.

Bosch on Tuesday confirmed Bobo approached her in 2004 and said he wanted to contribute to her campaign. She called the allegations by her ex-husband an attempt to discredit her.

Bosch said at the time of her 2004 election she didn’t know who Bobo was, but did say he dropped the money off at a business run at the time by her ex-husband and her — Eddie’s Electronics.

“That’s the end of the story,” she said. “I received nothing else from Jimmy Bobo. I have never taken any contributions from him.”

Bosch said she’s also voted against a request Bobo had before the county’s Zoning Board of Appeals and even lobbied the county commission to deny his request when he appealed.

Bosch, who said she’s been Bobo’s biggest opponent on the commission, added she reluctantly went along with the county’s creation of the Resource Recovery Development Authority in 2006 that approved a bond in an amount not to exceed $18.1 million.

The bonds were used to move Bobo’s company from Blalock Road near Holly Springs to its present site off Highway 5 just south of Ball Ground.

She also said her ex-husband was an “evil, nasty person” who “hates” and wants to “destroy” her.

The organization’s criticism stems from a decision by the commission in February to cover a debt payment after Cherokee Recycling owner Jimmy Bobo failed to make payments owed on the bonds the county had guaranteed.

The county at that time moved $1.8 million out of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds into the general fund to cover the payments on the debt.

The money from the general fund was originally used for expenses that were paid by SPLOST funds last year and the move would reimburse those payments back into the general fund, freeing the monies up to cover the bond debt payment.

The county commission addressed the organization’s complaints about the legalities of the decision last week.

Bobo did not return calls or emails by press time.

The tea party group on Tuesday also said Johnston had a significant jump in unidentified campaign contributions in 2008. The law allows individual contributions of $100 or less to be declared without the names of the contributors.

Johnston, who was not up for re-election in 2008, said he carefully follows campaign contributions laws.

The commissioner said he also follows the rules that require multiple contributions from the same or related donors to be combined and separately reported if they all exceed $100.

“I have always diligently followed that rule, including with some donations received from Jimmy Bobo in 2006,” he said.

Johnston said the Bobo family contributed $1,200 in 2006, which came from 12 members of Jimmy Bobo’s immediate and extended family.

“I recall telling him I’d still need to itemize the contributions under the ‘common source’ rule, and I don’t recall him raising any objection to doing so,” he said, adding the contributions add up to 3 percent of campaign funds he raised in 2006.

Cosby said Tuesday she had no problem with legal campaign contributions.

“I want to be perfectly clear, we don’t object to Bobo making legal contributions within the limits of the law to the candidates of his choice,” she said.

The TEA Party Patriots also announced it was introducing a Contract for Cherokee County Families, which the organization will ask interested candidates to sign if they promise to reveal the identity of donors who contribute $100 or less to their campaign.

Those adhering to the pledge will be named TEA Party Favorites.

According to Cosby, candidates who have agreed to sign the pledge include Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, state Rep. Charlice Byrd (R-Woodstock), and “TEA Party challengers” to the county commission Channing Ruskell of District 2 and Brian Poole of District 3.

I have had dealings with Karen Bosch over the last few decades and have seen some of the vile deeds this woman has done. She kept running charges on her ex husbands credit cards long after their divorce decree. She IS the very definition of a stereo-typical polition, and if anyone would be hanous enough to run someone down for a political agenda or abuse the campaign contributions it's her!!!Charges are being filed that will prove this statement!!

Wow!!! Talk about the definition of something-- this is certainly the definition of an angry ex. There were many times Karen would come to my house because she was fearful of Eddie hurting her.

I suppose Eddie forgot to mention he was her Campaign Chairman, and he took what he is calling a violation. Wouldn't that make him part of the situation?????????

There is really a lot about this sick man that no one knows. If I were him I wouldn't want to open that door, way too much will fall out.

I would like to know what is the point of bringing this up every week? It happened! May not have been the best decision but from what has been said the commissioners were under pressure from the neighbors to move this operation so they made a decision. If the economy had not tanked this would not be an issue. The commissioners have said they would not make the same decision today. They are human - they made a mistake - they admitted that and they are trying to find a solution.

Cosby does not even own a house anymore because of her own financial decisions so she does not pay property taxes so why does she think we will stand by and let her speak for us.

I honestly think that the best way to deal with Ms. Cosby is to ignore her. She's an attention-seeking, delusional nutjob. This latest stunt with the ex-husband was just plain tacky.

The thing that makes me sad is what she's doing to her latest victim: Cherokee County. She makes us look like squabbling idiots.

I felt the same way but after almost a year of her and her big mouth I just can't stand by anymore and listen to as though she speaks for us all. She is ruining this county and our reputation and it's time we fight to protect our county from this vicious hateful loud-mouth woman!

Funny to see McNiff with Cosby. His campaign disclosures are not accurate. He stated in an article that he only used his own money on his unsuccessful campaign in Nelson, but failed to list his contributions/expenditures.

Eddie Mahurin has been trying to sell that story for years, I guess he finally found a dupe dumb enough to actually go public.

It's hard to understand why TPP would allow a total lunatic like Cosby to speak on their behalf. The Bobo deal is indeed a major mess and those who approved it should face severe penalties. But there is no need to let a scorned ex join with a mentally bankrupt agitator in order to attack Mahurin.

It's funny how people can say and do anything they basically want to politicians without fear of criminal recourse. Some of them deserve it but not in this case.

I can even say things like the ski is purple and get credable witnesses like an x-husband to say it is purple. That doesnt make it purple.

I think everyone has TEA fatigue! It's time to give up and send this lady packing with them. The TEA party has become lame, tired, and frankly disgusting. Thanks for making me a democrat!

Everyone can do their own research on this woman going back to her days in Maine. She only has a life if she is causing trouble and getting her name in the paper even if it's on distorted or even incorrect information. I stopped having anything to do with the tea party when her involvement got in the way. She needs to go back where she came from because we do not need her kind here.

Isn’t it convenient that Cosby doesn’t bring Mike Byrd’s name up in the Bobo Boondoggle! Could it be because she just adores his wife Charlice?

Mike Byrd was the Chairman of the commission and if anyone is culpable it’s him. Strange how Cosby fails to mention that he received $13,885.00 in undisclosed contributions for 2006 just before he lead the other commissioners into this deal cooked up by the County attorney, Mark Mahler who also gave Byrd a contribution to his campaign in 03 – a non-election year.

To report such allegations withour first checking all the facts is and has been the tea parties tactics. Its one thing to work for justice and whats right, but to just go after headlines with no facts, no matter the price on the people you attack is wrong for the ones trying for the headlines and also the ones reporting it. As for others I just feel sorry for them. My wife is honest, loves cherokee county, and should be honored not attacked. Thank you to the many individuals who thank karen for her hard work.

Notice how those that criticize the efforts of the Canton Tea Party won't list their names? It seems to me that "Full Exposure" of the BOBO operations leads to a tangled web of deception only against unsuspecting non-privileged tax payers of Cherokee County to the tune of 18.5 MILLION DOLLARS. Where there's smoke .... Based on pure facts the Story (and that's what this is) has a life of it's own now. For those of you who like using food parts describing folks who make a real positive difference in this County;I would just remind you "that even a squirrel finds a nut once in while." I for one can't wait to hear the next shoe drop.

You are just as delusional as your leader. It’s a shame that she has lead the tea party to being just a fringe group with big mouths acting like they speak for all of us. She needs to get an award for being the biggest hypocrite in the county. She left us all to pick up the tab for her financial debacle and now she thinks she’s an expert to tell our government how to conduct their finances.

From the articles still available online, if you google her, the people in Maine were very happy to see this bigoted woman leave the state. If only we could be so fortunate!

I normally mind my own business but after learning about this woman and her bankruptcy and foreclosure and the enormous amount of money she stuck us all with I think it's time that we file complaints with the District Attorney and the IRS to have her investigated. I would like an explanation of how she was able to get approved for $1,353,683.28 of credit that she walked away from against her stated income of $16,584.00 for the same year she racked up her debt. It’s all in black and white in public records, FACTS not like the fiction she spews!

Please make her go away – this woman is a nut job. All she wants is to be the center of attention and the Tribune appears to catering to her whims. She is not only ruining the Republican Party, she is ruining our county. The more she is in our paper the more people and businesses will be turned off to the idea of moving to Cherokee.

Enough is enough!

I agree, she acts like she speaks for us all. She is against everything and she has a real problem telling the truth even after she is given the facts she continues to spread her lies and misinformation.

Who does she think she is? She seems to have appointed herself as the spokesman for everything. I am sick of hearing her complain about everything. Go Away!!!!!

Go away TEA Party...I am certain that no one wants to be a "favorite" of yours. The less than $100 rule is more about the donor than the receiver. If the candidate has no interest in raising more funds, then they should become your "favorite". Why don't you concentrate your time and efforts elsewhere..maybe where something really matters. Thank you for ruining the Republican Party!
