WOODSTOCK — A Canton man was in Cobb County Jail after a Friday morning hit-and-run accident on Interstate 575 that hospitalized a construction worker at the new Rope Mill interchange.

Kenneth Gonzalez, 53, was arrested by Cobb County Police around 1:50 p.m. Friday on charges of driving under the influence.

Charges in the hit-and-run are pending, according to the Woodstock Police Department.

Gonzalez is accused of hitting a construction worker, whose name hasn’t been released, in a construction zone southbound just before Towne Lake Parkway around 9:30 a.m.

Woodstock Police Chief Calvin Moss credited help from other motorists with saving the man’s life and leading police to the suspect.

Moss said the hit-and-run driver first hit construction barrels before careening through them and hitting a tractor-trailer truck that was “clearly in a marked off construction area.”

The driver of the larger truck had stepped out to load equipment when he was struck by a pickup truck.

A passing motorist, identified as Kimberly Matthews, who has emergency medical training, got out and began to administer CPR on the injured man, Moss said.

“She was a real hero. What she did probably saved the man’s life,” Moss said.

Meanwhile, another motorist took off after the pickup truck and was able to get a tag number and a description of what turned out to be a gray 2006 GMC Sierra.

Police notified the media of the tag number and received a 911 call from a woman who spotted the vehicle in a parking lot on Canton Road, just over the Cobb County line, Moss said.

Woodstock Police responded and were joined by Cobb County Police. The man in the pickup truck took off and was apprehended after he stopped on a side street, Moss said.

“We are obviously pleased to bring this man to justice,” Moss said.

Woodstock Police investigators said they were going to secure warrants for Gonzalez’s arrest with pending charges related to the hit and run.

Michael Bowman, spokesman for the Cobb County Police Department, said Gonzalez was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta for a state-administered chemical test for possible impairment before being transported to Cobb County Jail.
