The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Going Green Committee has concluded their Mayor’s Challenge recycling event which challenged cities in Cherokee County to encourage their residents to recycle during the months of June and July.
Total pounds recycled, as well as per capita averages, were announced during the Chamber’s September Good Morning Cherokee breakfast meeting.
The city of Canton collected the most recycling which totaled 240,543 pounds followed by Ball Ground — 27,657 pounds, Waleska — 22,560 pounds, Holly Springs — 14,000 pounds and Nelson — 1,500 pounds.
The combined total collected by all the cities was 306,260 pounds.
The city of Waleska collected the most recycling per capita with 35 pounds per resident as determined based on 2010 Census population figures.
Additional per capita totals included city of Ball Ground: 19.3 pounds, city of Canton: 10.5 pounds, city of Nelson: 2.5 pounds and the city of Holly Springs with 1.5 pounds.
The mission of the Chamber’s Going Green initiative is to encourage the community to implement green practices that conserve community resources while helping businesses thrive.
