The service for 53-year-old Jerome George Cundy is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the South Canton Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Marvin Coleman presiding.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations has so far not released any findings in its inquiry into the incident that occurred following a police chase.
Woodstock Police, Cherokee Sheriff’s deputies and officers from Cobb County were on the scene of the shooting.
Cundy was suspected of robbing a Walgreens on the corner of Bells Ferry and Hawkins Store roads in Cobb County just after 8 a.m. last Sunday. Less than two hours later, he was suspected of robbing a Marathon gas station on Bells Ferry and Victoria roads in Woodstock, where a victim said Cundy took around $500 in cash, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
After the second robbery, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies issued an alert of the suspect and his vehicle.
Woodstock Police spotted Cundy’s vehicle, described as a green passenger car. They say a chase ensued when he refused to stop for authorities near Bells Ferry Road and
Interstate 575, with Cundy leading police southbound on I-75 for about seven minutes.
Cundy was finally stopped in the southbound lanes of I-75 at the South Marietta Parkway in Marietta, authorities said, but Cundy then reportedly pointed a gun at officers, at which time he was shot.
The interstate was closed for nearly six hours while investigators reconstructed the scene, causing major backups on the highway and other roads. The GBI released Cundy’s name Monday.
According to a police report released by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Monday officers responding to the armed robbery at the Marathon got a description of the suspect from the woman who was alone in the store at the time of the incident.
Cundy is survived by his wife, Eileen Patricia Cundy of Woodstock, a son, a daughter and several grandchildren.
