The Cherokee Chamber of Commerce recently received a $2,500 grant for economic development to go along with a $10,000 grant presented to Papa’s Pantry, an area food pantry.
Those donations join the $25,000 already given to Reinhardt University and $7,000 to volunteer fire departments in Cherokee County within the Amicalola EMC service area.
Clayton Elementary, whose electric supplier is Amicalola EMC, was Cherokee County’s largest grant recipient, accepting a $45,000 grant Tuesday from Amicalola EMC Board of Directors this week for a new playground.
Charles Gibson, president and CEO of Amicalola Electric Membership Corp., who presented the check to Clayton, said he was glad the company could help the community.
“We are glad to do it,” Gibson said Tuesday.
Thanks to state legislation passed in 2005, unclaimed property funds can be spent locally for specific purposes. All donations must be used within the Amicalola EMC service territory.
State law will only allow these funds to be used for these approved purposes and will not allow the unclaimed refunds to be used to offset rates or pay power bills.
Earlier this year, the Amicalola EMC board of directors funded $80,000 in scholarship dollars for high school juniors and seniors and an expanded BRIGHT IDEAS education grant program for teachers is currently underway.
These and many other community related projects are part of Amicalola EMC’s strong and ongoing commitment toward the development of local communities, according to a release from Stacey Fields, public relations director for Amicalola EMC.
