The sales tax holiday will take place from 12:01 a.m. today through midnight Sunday and will apply to: dishwashers, clothes washers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, fluorescent light bulbs, dehumidifiers, programmable thermostats, refrigerators, doors and windows that have the Energy Star label and a purchase price of $1,500 or less.
It also applies to: bathroom sink faucets, high-efficiency toilets and urinals, showerheads, faucet accessories (such as aerators), and weather- or sensor-based irrigation controllers that have the WaterSense label and a purchase price of $1,500 or less.
The state and local sales tax exemption does not apply to purchases for trade, business, resale or commercial use, according to the Georgia Department of Revenue.
Cobb EMC, which has 37,993 meters in Cherokee County, says conserving energy at home can help the environment and reduce monthly bills. Some energy-efficient investments such as ceiling fans and programmable thermostats, can also make a big impact on a home’s comfort level, according to the company.
“We always encourage members to consider home improvements that reduce their energy use,” said Mark Justice, Cobb EMC associate vice president of education and community relations.
“It’s simple. The less energy you use, the lower your monthly bills. This weekend’s tax holiday is the perfect chance for families debating an energy upgrade to get more for their dollar, both at the register and for years to come.”
In August, the state held a back-to-school tax-free weekend, the first since 2009.
Gov. Nathan Deal this week said that consumers can save money while conserving energy and water during the upcoming Energy Star and WaterSense sales tax holiday.
“I encourage everyone to play their part in maintaining our environment by participating in the tax-free holiday to save money and ultimately conserve Georgia’s resources,” said Deal.
Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy that encourages the use of energy efficient products and practices to save money and protect the environment. WaterSense, an EPA partnership program, offers consumers tips on how to use less water with water efficient products.
