The accident happened Friday afternoon on Georgia Highway 372 east of Ball Ground near the Etowah River Bridge, according to a spokesperson with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.
The driver of the car was life-flighted by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition, according to spokesperson Tim Cavender in a release.
Identified as 46-year-old Kelley Gwen Turner of Ball Ground by the Georgia State Patrol who is investigating the accident, the woman was in critical condition with a number of internal injuries, according to Cavender.
“She was in critical condition, and had a bad, extremely deep cut to her left arm,” Cavender said. “The Med-con said she had a lot of internal injuries as well.”
The Ford Mustang had apparently left the road, gone down an embankment and struck some trees, officials said.
“Her Mustang left the road while northbound, traveled down an embankment and hit a tree with the top of the vehicle. She was ejected,” said Georgia State Patrol spokesperson Gordy Wright.
Also a dog was found dead at the scene, and investigators now say the canine belonged to the driver.
Both lanes of Highway 372 were blocked until the wreckage was cleared. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.
