WOODSTOCK — Three men suspected of stealing large quantities of cigarettes from seven convenience stores in five metro Atlanta counties were arrested Wednesday.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, working with detectives from Douglas, Rockdale, Cobb and Henry counties, arrested the three men after identifying them from video surveillance and following them along Highway 92 before stopping their vehicle.

Vincent Donehue, James Hill and Mark McCain were all charged in the suspected burglaries, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

“At approximately 2:45 a.m., a Cherokee sheriff’s deputy pulled the vehicle over,” Baker said. “Inside the vehicle investigators located plastic bins (which had been used in all the burglaries to transport cigarettes out of the stores), a hammer, rubber gloves, masks and a sledge hammer.”

A small amount of heroin was also located in the vehicle, Baker said.

Donehue, 42, of Jonesboro, is charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, possession of tools to commit a crime and possession of heroin. His bond is set at $44,800.

Hill, 46, of Snellville, is charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, possession of tools to commit a crime, possession of heroin and giving a false name. His bond is set at $45,480.

McCain, 47 of Atlanta, is charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, possession of tools to commit a crime, forgery in the second degree and possession of heroin. His bond is set at $36,000.

“It is very likely they were actively looking for a business in Cherokee County this morning to burglarize,” Baker said. “Detectives and uniform deputies intervened before that could happen.”

All three are in custody at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center.
