ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a homeless man who was killed by a car as he pushed a shopping cart on an Athens street.

Athens-Clarke police say the crash happened Wednesday night on Old Hull Road. They said the man was pushing his belongings in a shopping cart when he was struck by an SUV.

Police identified the man as 21-year-old Jonathan Ryan Brown, who died at the scene. His girlfriend, who was walking with him, was not hurt.

Police tell The Athens Banner-Herald that the Jefferson man who was driving the SUV immediately stopped and called 911. Police said Brown was walking in an area with little or no lighting, and he was wearing dark clothing.
