WOODSTOCK — Two suspects believed by authorities to be involved with an attempted armed robbery at Cherokee Bank in Woodstock on Friday morning are in custody.

The two suspects were identified as Thomas Gasque, 21, of Decatur and Michael Moore, 21, of Stone Mountain by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

They are both charged with armed robbery, criminal attempt at armed robbery, and motor vehicle hijacking, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesperson with the Sheriff’s Office.

Woodstock Police believe the two were also involved in a carjacking at the nearby Lowe’s Home Improvement on Highway 92 just prior to the attempted robbery, said Brittany Duncan with the Woodstock Police Department.

After the carjacking attempt, a man wearing a black mask entered the bank at at 159 Woodstock Square Avenue and started yelling, “give me the money,” Cherokee Bank President Dennis Burnette said.

Burnette said when bank tellers screamed, the man panicked and left the bank without taking any money.

Rick Roberts, CFO of Cherokee Bank, said one of the suspects jumped over the counter while attempting to commit the robbery.

“No one was injured, just shaken up,” Roberts said.

Roberts said the suspect was in and out of the bank in about 30 seconds and nothing was taken from the building.

“It was an unsuccessful robbery attempt,” Roberts said

Woodstock police then obtained a description of the vehicle carjacked earlier and a plate number and sent it out via a “be on the lookout” alert. Duncan said the vehicle was soon found unoccupied nearby and they believed a second car was involved.

The Georgia State Patrol took the men in custody in neighboring Cobb County.

“Right now, we have units en route to I-75 and I-285 where (Georgia State Patrol) believes they have the suspects stopped,” Duncan said Friday morning.

Police questioned the men and they were later booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center where they are being held without bond.
