Scott Welker, Woodstock Riding Club operator and equine enthusiast, is bringing back Anderson’s ambitions and facility with big plans and major renovations already in the works.
Anderson was known for running the landmark Cedar Crest Farms, a club-like horse-boarding farm that serves lunch each Saturday on its grounds.
While age and other factors have caused the grounds to fall into times of disrepair, Welker said he saw the opportunity to restore the vision and add even more grandeur to this Woodstock destination.
“I am blessed and honored that Lautrell’s son, Dusty Free, has put his faith in me to restore the vision his mother had,” Welker said. “My plans are not only to restore that vision but to create a dreamscape for horse enthusiasts far and wide.”
Among the list of planned improvements, some of the most notable ones will be the fencing, which will be painted black to match the fencing across the street; both barns will be painted Charleston Green with white trim; all pathways will be graveled to reduce mud in times of wet weather; and a fenced cross-country course will be located where “Shady Acres” once was.
Welker, who is a third generation horseman with more than 30 years of experience, is also excited about the addition of the interior of the bottom barn, which will become two coal clubs, one for kids and one for adults which will include satellite television and WIFI services, and an outdoor grilling area.
“Folks will be able to relax and enjoy the history that surrounds them,” Welker said.
Welker plans to honor the celebration as a tribute to Anderson and will be accepting donations for the Alzheimer’s Foundation on her behalf.
