CANTON — A man was shot in what is believed to be a family dispute on Lakeview Drive in Canton at about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, police say.

The Canton Police Department is investigating the shooting, but the initial investigation indicates that the victim and the shooter are family members.

The victim, a man whose name has not been released, was transported to Northside Hospital-Cherokee for medical treatment, according to a police department release.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Community Outreach Officer Pacer Cordry said Canton police officers were “getting closer” to making an arrest. Investigators remained on the scene conducting interviews through the afternoon, Cordry said.

Canton Elementary School and Cherokee High School locked all exterior doors as advised by police when the shooting was first reported, according to Cherokee County School District spokesperson Barbara Jacoby. The schools received an “all-clear” from the police department to resume normal activity around 2:50 p.m.

So thankful that none of our CHS students were injured in the events yesterday. It is apparent that more practice drills are necessary to eliminate the chaos and confusion and to ensure that the faculty and students understand what the codes are and how to appropriately react.

The shooting happened exactly at 1:35pm, not 2:20. I heard the gun fire right across the street from my house.

It would be very helpful if we had done practice drills before everything that happened today. First with the tornado warnings and then with the code red, it was a very confusing day at Cherokee High School. Maye if we practice tornado drills and code reds once a month, everyone in the school will know what each sound that comes over the intercom means. That way if we are ever stuck in a real situation like today, we will have practiced enough to know exactly what to do. Like I said, it was a very confusing day at Cherokee High School.

Thank you to CHS and the system in place to be proactive of locking down the school even though the shooting had nothing to do with the school or anyone at the school. It is nice to know that the first and most important response the school took was to make sure our Children were safe.

Does not matter how many times it is practiced, anytime there is a code red with a tornado drill it is going to be difficult. Thank God all of our students made it through safe. School officials across the board are faced with major challenges. Please keep up the good work.
