The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Going Green Committee is sponsoring a two-day Newspaper Recycling Competition between 10 of Cherokee County’s Elementary Schools this coming week.
The contest takes place Wednesday and Thursday. Schools participating in the event are Mountain Road, Woodstock, Hasty, Holly Springs, Liberty, Boston, Bascomb, Johnston and Sixes elementary schools and Chapman Intermediate.
Collection containers will be provided by Waste Management, who will also assist in determining weights collected, as well as recycling the newspapers.
The total amount of newspaper collected at each school will be determined and then the entire winning school will be rewarded for their efforts.
In appreciation for their hard work, each student of that school will receive a gift card from a Chamber member restaurant.
“Not only are students being taught about the importance of recycling, their parents are being reminded to spend their time and dollars locally when taking their child to use the gift card,” said John Barker, chair of the Going Green Committee for the Chamber.
The mission of the Chamber’s Going Green initiative is to encourage the community to implement green practices that conserve community resources while helping businesses thrive.
