A political mailer hit some Cherokee County homes late last week calling House District 21 candidate Brian Laurens a "clear choice for conservatives in Cherokee County."

The flier lists the name and website of south Georgia-based group Georgia Conservatives in Action and appears to have come from the group.

But Scot Turner, Laurens' opponent in Tuesday's runoff for the House seat, says Georgia Conservatives in Action didn't issue the piece.

Turner said he signed a $100 gift cap pledge sponsored by several organizations, including Georgia Conservatives in Action.

"It did not make sense to me that they would issue a negative piece of mail as though they did not know who I was," Turner said.

Turner said he then started making phone calls and found out Georgia Conservatives in Action did not send the mailer.

He said he and his campaign team have "been in touch with multiople people with the ethics coalition, which Georgia Conservatives in Action are part of."

Turner said his campaign did not issue a robocall Sunday night decrying the mailer. However, a recorded phone message did go out to some households in Cherokee County during the Super Bowl.

"We did a social media response. That's all we had time for," Turner said.

The mailer has also stirred up a storm of comment on Georgia political blogs and websites since it hit mailboxes.

Laurens did not respond to repeated telephone calls seeking comment.

Representatives for Georgia Conservatives in Action did not respond to requests for comment.
